Welcome to Adopt Special Children

Many, many children, are abandoned or orphaned all over the world.

Of these children, many are classified as special needs because they have physical disabilities, emotional or psychological problems, illness, disease, or developmental delays. Some are considered to be special needs simply because of their age or because of their ethnic background. The vast majority of these Special Needs children will never be considered for adoption or have a chance at having a family. Most are considered to be “unadoptable” because they are not “healthy”.

Special needs children born in many countries are immediately placed into state care.

In many societies, the stigma of having or raising a handicapped child forces parents to relinquish their newborn or newly injured or ill child to an orphanage or other out of home care. In many cases, medical personnel encourage this practice and tell a mother to try again to get a “healthy” baby. In most of the world, the costs of medical care, treatment, therapy or medically related equipment can be overwhelming for a family. In other places, appropriate care is simply not available. Sometimes, poverty causes a new parent to release their child for adoption or ends up in children being neglected or abused and their parent’s rights being terminated.
We are fighting the misconceptions, stereotypes and just plain ignorance about children who are different…

Adopt Special Children is a project of many people. Many of us have adopted special needs children, others have not adopted at all. But we all have a common goal. We hope that by offering information, support and education, that maybe you will consider one of these special needs children when you look towards adoption. Because the area of special needs is so vast, we are putting together a network of individual sites, each concentrating on a specific disease or condition, or a group of similar or related conditions.
These children need YOUR help!

Have you adopted a special needs child? Would you be willing to share your story with others? Positive adoption stories like yours help to get others interested in adopting special needs children. Information on care and treatment of specific conditions educate and encourage others. Stories of special people succeeding in life teach others what IS possible.
Special People Needed

You do not have to adopt a special child to be a special person, but you DO need to do something. There are a multitude of ways in which you can help. If you have information that would be of assistance to an adoptive family, please help us. We are looking for volunteers to assist us in adding to our website and to help in getting the word out that thousands of wonderful children who are looking for and deserve families are overlooked every day.
It is our goal that none of these children be denied a family simply because of their ‘Special Need’

Our goal is enormous, and quite frankly, unobtainable without assistance. We are fighting the misconceptions, stereotypes and just plain ignorance about children who are different than the “healthy baby” most potential adoptive families see as their ideal child. Our weapon is Knowledge. Knowledge that all of us can share with others to inform, educate and encourage them to at least consider one of these special children when they think of adopting.
